Chapters 3-5 Mental/Emotional Health

The learner will be introduced to the types of stress, their causes, stress- management techniques, and the influence that stress has on the human body. Also, the ability to cope with loss and how the stages of the grieving process affect our mental and emotional state. Finally, the learner will be introduced to the many types of mental and emotional disorders that are most common throughout society in an effort to recognize their specific signs and symptoms, as well as how to deal with them appropriately.

Substance Abuse Scavenger Hunt

The learner will find information about certain drugs. These drugs are marijuana, ecstasy, Anabolic Steroids, Nicotine, Methamphetamine, and Alcohol. The learner will go to the home page of http://teens.drugabuse.gov, ( NIDA for Teens). The will click on the Drug Facts link for each drug and answer the questions with the information provided by the website. Each question per category will be worth 4 points. Each answer will need to be typed. There will be no hand written projects accepted unless approved in advance by the instructor. The project will be due on Monday, April 25, 2016. If the learner is absent on the April 25, then the completed project is due to be turned in during class on the 1st day back to school.

Nutrition Scavenger Hunt Project

The learner will be required to complete a internet scavenger hunt on nutrition. They will follow instructions to log onto specific web cites in order to be able to answer specific questions that are provided for them. They are to answer each question completely as possible from the information obtained from each web cite.This is considered a project and should be turned in by the required due date which will be on March 7, 2016. If the student is absent on the due date then the project should be turned in on the first day back for credit, if not the student will receive a zero. Each number is worth a total of 4 points each if completed in full. Also, the project will only be accepted late for an excused absence.

Non-Infectious Diseases PPT Project

The student will be assigned a Non-Communicable Disease to research and create a power point that will identify the symptoms of the disease, describe the effects the disease has on the body, and describe the course of treatment. The power point should consist of a minimum of 6 slides that will cover specific questions outlined in the instructions on a handout given to each student. The last slide should include all works cited. Finally, each student will be required to present their power point to their peers in an effort to teach the remaining class member about the specific disease.
The Power Point project is do on Wed. March 25, 2015.

All About Me

The student will create a power point that will share information about themselves concerning their personal likes and dislikes. The project will give the student an opportunity to enhance their creative computer skills, while allowing the other students in the class the ability to get to know their peers on a more personal level . Hopefully this will  lead to the building of positive relationships within the classroom environment.
The power point project is due: January 12, 2015.

Allied Health Career Power Point

The learner will investigate a allied health career of their choice and create a power point that will be presented to the class. The student will research the following items:

1. What is the primary goal of the profession?
2. What type of education or experience is required for the profession?
3. What type of personal characteristics must you have to perform the profession?
4. What type of certification/credential are required by governing agencies,and what is the process of obtaining and maintaining those credentials? Is there continuing  education required for the profession?
5. What is the typical salary scale for the profession?
