The Foot and Ankle
The learner will be introduced to the anatomical make up of the foot and ankle. Also, the many types of acute and chronic injuries that can occur will discussed in detail. Finally, the mechanisms of injury, the evaluation process, and the treatment protocals for these injuries will be explained.

Personal Communications/Electronic Devices
Please refer to page 27 of the Student Handbook to understand the policy concerning CELL PHONES.
These devices are not required or approved for use at any time during Health/Sports Medicine instruction unless approved by the classroom instructor. Once instruction has begun all cell phone use is prohibited unless approved by the classroom instructor.

Health Chapter 2- Taking Charge Of Your Life
The learner will be introduced to the decision making model as well as the process of goal setting. The learner will be able to describe specific health skills, communication skills, refusal skills, and conflict resolution skills, that one needs to make positive choices in their lives. Finally, the learner will be able to understand the importance of becoming a health-literate consumer.

Medical Terminology
The learner will be introduced to the use of medical terminology to evaluate and describe the many different types of sports related injuries. This will include anatomical stuctures, signs/symptoms, ranges of motion, injury types, and locations of structures within the human body.

Introduction to Sports Medicine Syllabus
Grading:
Unit Test 45%

****** All long-term assignments and prearranged test are due and must be completed on the date of return after an excused absence. ( refer to page 17 of the student handbook).
****** The Sports Medicine Notebook is required to be turned in by the prearranged due date.
There will be no late Sports Medicine Notebooks accepted with out an excused absence. The notebooks will need to contain all work pertaining to the class requirements and will receive a zero if missing more than 15% of the material. This is considered a long term assignment which will be submitted for 10% of the final grade during the week of final exams. The notebook should be neat and sectioned out according to the units covered from 1st to last unit. It will be required to be turned in when the student walks into the room on the prearranged due date, or will be considered late as well as incomplete if not done so. This issue will also result in the student receiving a zero for the notebook.
*******Lab Practicum/Final is considered a long term assignment which will be designated as 20% of the final grade. (refer to page 17 of the student handbook). This portion of the class is a hands on practicum that requires full participation with practice sessions that directly correlate to the success of the student. The student will be instructed on a number of different tapings commonly used in the field of Athletic Training and will have opportunities to practice those skills on a weekly basis. At the end of the 18 week semester the student will be required to demonstrate those acquired skills and knowledge base by participating in a Lab Final Exam. To receive full credit the student must show proficient skills and knowledge pertaining to the taping.

***** 20% of your grade includes a hands on lab portion that incorporates an introduction to anatomical wrappings and tapings for various injuries and injury sites. This portion of the semester will be introduced once everyone returns to school or the 20% will be divided up into the other categories.
Health Intervention and Extension
- The Health Intervention/ Extension implementation for the 2019-2020 school year will include a 45min. instruction period each week that is geared toward improving or enhancing student outcomes are as follows;
A.)
For the students that score 70% or lower on the
chapter or Unit assessments, the intervention process will include the
completion of the chapter assessment Review section in the back of each chapter
that correlates with the current unit being taught. This will be followed by at
least a 15 minute instructor led review of the material. Once the intervention
has been completed then the student will have the opportunity to retake the
assessment again within a 24 hour period.
B.)
If any student scores 85% or lower on an
assessment they too will be able to chose to retake the assessment within a 24
hr. period to try and improve their score without having to complete the review
section in the back of the chapter for an extension intervention. If the
student decides not to retake the assessment then they will proceed to the next
unit of study.

Soft Tissue and Bone Healing Process/Modalities
The learner will be introduced to the many different types of soft tissue and bony injuries that can occur in sports, along with the physiological healing processes of both types of structures. Also, the learner will be introduced to the many modalities that are used to control swelling and decrease pain. Finally, the student will be able to destinguish between the uses of each modality, including their indications and contraindications.
