                                            Introduction to Sports Medicine Syllabus


The learner will be introduced to the fields of Sports Medicine and Athletic Training. It will provide the student with basic information that is relevant to the prevention, recognition, first aid, referral, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. The student will also be exposed to the basics of training room organization and function. The learner will also learn basic anatomy, mechanism's of injury, and the signs/symptoms as they pertain to the injury evaluation, assessment, recognition, and prevention of a wide range of athletic injuries.

Grading:
Unit Test 45%
Class work/ Homework 10%
Quizzes 5%
Lab 20% (Considered a long term assignment-refer to page 17 of student handbook).
Notebook 10% (Considered a long term assignment-refer to page 17 of student handbook).

****** All long-term assignments and prearranged test are due and must be completed on the date of return after an excused absence. ( refer to page 17 of the student handbook).

****** The Sports Medicine Notebook is required to be turned in by the prearranged due date.
There will be no late Sports Medicine Notebooks accepted with out an excused absence. The notebooks will need to contain all work pertaining to the class requirements and will receive a zero if missing more than 15% of the material. This is considered a long term assignment which will be submitted for 10% of the final grade during the week of final exams. The notebook should be neat and sectioned out according to the units covered from 1st to last unit. It will be required to be turned in when the student walks into the room on the prearranged due date, or will be considered late as well as incomplete if not done so. This issue will also result in the student receiving a zero for the notebook.


*******Lab Practicum/Final is considered a long term assignment which will be designated as 20% of the final grade. (refer to page 17 of the student handbook). This portion of the class is a hands on practicum that requires full participation with practice sessions that directly correlate to the success of the student. The student will be instructed on a number of different tapings commonly used in the field of Athletic Training and will have opportunities to practice those skills on a weekly basis. At the end of the 18 week semester the student will be required to demonstrate those  acquired skills and knowledge base by participating in a Lab Final Exam. To receive full credit the student must show proficient skills and knowledge pertaining to the taping.

***** 20% of your grade includes a hands on lab portion that incorporates an introduction to anatomical wrappings and tapings for various injuries and injury sites. This portion of the semester will be introduced once everyone returns to school or the 20% will be divided up into the other categories.
